It’s no secret that 2020 has been a year full of unexpected battles. However, I like to think this means we, as a society, are being given even more opportunities to rise above our challenges with greater resilience. COVID-19 was something I never thought I’d have to go through as a business owner, but I am grateful that this situation has helped shape me into an even stronger entrepreneur, and my team at Wave 15 into an even more remarkable unit.
“I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by it.” -Maya Angelou
This pandemic created uncertainty for us all, but one thing I knew for sure was, I wanted to be the best leader I could be. With the help of my team, we worked together to come up with a solid course of action during this time. First, we decided to cease all in-office operations and make the shift to remote work from home for the safety of our teammates, and all those around us.
Here at Wave 15, my team and I are close-knit and enjoy daily in-person communication. It is one of the reasons we stand out to our clients; we are a team they can easily talk to and trust. Although it was tough, I knew we wouldn’t let this knock us down.
Right away, we began to take advantage of this technological era we’re in and stayed connected through Zoom video calls. During these virtual meetings, we continued to tackle our responsibilities and put our student mentalities into practice. Together, we read books, listened to podcasts, and tuned in to live guest speakers from our industry. This routine helped establish a sense of normalcy.
In the midst of the chaos, I knew it was vital that we not only worked on personal development and self-care but also maintained our lively team culture. When we’re not in a pandemic, you can find us bowling, watching movies, enjoying meals, spending time at the beach, and more – weekly. This is a tradition we cherish, and I knew it couldn’t get left behind.
What has been our solution? The Wave 15 crew and I made sure to hop on virtually for “happy hours,” online games, and chats to catch up. I firmly believe that when the going gets tough, you have to stick with your support system, and that is exactly what we have been doing.
Once I made sure our team dynamic was still strong, next up on the list was figuring out how to expand our circle. Together, we implemented a digital recruitment module. This process has allowed us to recruit, interview, and hire online – all while maintaining social distancing best practices.
With our in-office operations slowly expanding back to normal, I can confidently say that Wave 15 is back in action, developing day-by-day, and utilizing all our resources during this time. Here’s to acknowledging the unknown, making the necessary shifts, and remaining positive and relentless as we come out on top.
